Our goal is to keep the classes small. Teachers are added as registration comes in insuring students are in correct level. Level classes can go from I to V depending on enrollment.
Big Band with Don Braden: Arrangements are written by Don Braden and other masters and performed at the concert on Friday evening and at the Jazz Festival.
Guitar Ensemble with Vic Juris: All guitars will play together in an
ensemble with great arrangements and a rhythm section. They will learn to read parts and learn to listen to each other.
CLASS TOPICS INCLUDE:
Learning to play in a rhythm Section: Learning the role of each instrument interacting with each other.
How To Practice: A structured way on how to make the most of the information, including II-V-I, learning and memorizing the jazz repertoire, scales and modes, rhythm, improvisation.
Rhythm Class: Learning different rhythms used in Jazz, learning how to swing, bossa, samba and how to develop good time.
Understand the blues the foundation of Jazz: Learning how to play a blues and swing with it. A major blues, minor blues , blues heads and altered blues.
Repertoire Ensembles: Special ensembles focusing on “the Blues and Rhythm Changes” or Latin Music or “Jazz Standards”, music of Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, or The American Songbook music of Cole Porter, Gershwin, Irving Berlin and more.
Improvisation and Ear Training: With your instrument you will be learning to improvise and work on ear training.
Performance Ensembles: This ensemble will focus on the final performance, using repertoire from the faculty. The students will learn to play in an small group, improvise and perform on these pieces being coached by world renown faculty member.
MID DAY FACULTY JAM – Teachers will perform different interpretations of the jazz standard including different rhythms, harmony and odd meters. Teachers will explore the intricacies of playing ballads, the blues, latin, sambas and swing. A question and answer period will follow with the students sitting in for some hands on experience.
MASTER CLASS – Working with the teacher of your instrument, the student will work on technique, improvisation, chord voicing, reading, phrasing, and understanding of form and memorization of tunes.
